BOOKS FOR AFRICA
Five years ago Helmut Sommer and his wife went to several regions in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Namibia. The tour organizers told them that most of the villagers in the more remote areas in that region have no access to books and are basically illiterate. INTERNATIONAL PROJECT
Thanks to Immediate Past President Theresa, Francis Murillo and a contigent of Rotarians who recently visited San Martin de Hidalgo, our international project in that small Mexican town is on track.
San Martin is a town of approximately 30,000 in Central Mexico, about an hour from Guadalajara. Our club is partnering with Rotary International, our district, and two Mexican Rotary clubs to build San Martin’s fi rst park. Currently, the town’s children have no where to play but busy and dangerous dirt streets.
On our recent October visit, our club met with San Martin city officials and representatives from the Mexican Rotary Clubs (in neighboring Ameca and the new San Martin club) to make decisions about how work on the park would be paid and monitored. Our matching grant from Rotary International and the district will be available within the next six weeks, so our work on the project is about to begin.
Other trips to San Martin are planned over the next six months to check on the park’s progress. If you are interested in visiting San Martin, please talk with Joanie Erickson.
